BARRIKA

THE LANDING OF THE FLYSCH

THE SANDS OF BARRIKA

The sandy deposits of Barrika are dunes hanging over the cliff and they're up to 15 metres deep. Do you know why they're up there? The wave-cut platform emerged and the sandy deposits on top of them were raised as well. The sand is quartz and it was formed by the action of the wind on the coast. The dunes were mined until the late 20th century for construction and today they're being colonised by vegetation.

The hanging dunes of Muriola over the cliff of Barrika are, in the first place, an enormous deposit of great geological and archaeological interest because of their unique characteristic along the coast of Biscay as a record of the successive climatic variations and the way humans have used the sands since prehistory.
